My name is Glenn J. Hill and I want to welcome you to the world of my Custom One-of-a-kind harps! :-)
I have been designing and building one-of-a kind Custom carved and sculpted Harps for the last thirty four years, starting in 1978.
Over the years my clients have many times asked me to design and build for them types of harps that have never been seen before. I have always enjoyed this challenging type of creative work, and continue to do so.
If you have an idea for a harp that you have
never seen before, go ahead and share your thoughts on it with me.
I enjoy the co-creative process of working with my clients to bring their most amazing dream harps to life !

A Bit About how I Build My Harps
How I build my Custom Harp Sound boxes
My sound boxes are usually built in a five sided, (not counting the soundboard), staved configuration. I cut all three pieces of each side of the sound box, so the wood grain flows from one panel to the next. Starting at the soundboard, and then flowing to the back, where the book matching reverses direction, and back to the other side of the soundboard.
I can, upon request build you a harp with a four sided sound box, counting the soundboard as the fourth side. This type of sound box is often used when building a harp styled after some of the ancient Celtic models. With this shape sound box, the wood grain will still flow around the box, as described above.
I build Gothic style sound boxes in either way, and they can be quite compact, as in the harps built in the early medieval period, or with larger sound boxes that will still have the Gothic 'look', but with more air volume, will produce a larger sound.
I build most all my harps to have from 19 up to 45 natural notes. My wire harps can be the same sizes, from 19 up to 42 strings. Each harp I build can be designed and built of be as compact, or as large as you desire. This means all the dimensions, height, width of the harp from the box out to the pillar, the width and size of the sound box, etc. With this very flexible design service, the size and weight of the harps I build can vary wildly, depending on your needs. For example, a typical weight for a 36 string harp I can build, with a C to C note range, is about 18 Lbs. And the typical height would be about 56 inches. But for a person who sits taller (or who wishes to be able to play standing up), then the total height of the same harp might be up to 63 inches or more, with the same number of notes. Or, the same harp could be built to be more compact as well.
My Lyres or King David Kinnors, usually have only 10 strings, which is the number that many believe the ancient Jewish Harps to have had. But I can built this type of harp/Lyre to have more than 10, or less, as you wish.
How I Design and Space my String Sets
String spacing and Tension. As on all my harps, I can build your new harp to have any string spacing and string tension you wish to have. Anything from true concert-harp string spacing and tension, to a close spaced, light tension Gothic type. My wire strung harps can have a finger tip spacing, or the more common close spacing for finger nails.
Using my custom computer program, and a library of over one-thousand harp string patterns, along with measurements from a harp that you are currently playing, I can reproduce a string spacing and tension that you are already comfortable with. I may also ask you to directly measure the spacing on your current harp, in order to give you a perfect match for your new harp. For my wire harps, I can vary the spacing depending on how you intend to play your harp. For traditional wire playing, a narrow string spacing is desirable. But, if you intend to use your finger-tips in playing, then a bit wider spacing is needed. And if you wish your wire harp to be fitted with Loveland sharping levers, then a wider spacing is needed as well.
Harp above and below: Chinese Dragon Harp, 38 nylon strings, Black Walnut with Black Lacquered Spruce sound board. Dragon is holding a large Jade Crystal in it`s claws. The Dragon starts out with it`s tail coming out of the lower sound hole on the back of the sound box. It then curls up the entire pillar. The harp neck is carved with sprays/branches of Ginkgo leaves. Harp has gilded sound holes in Chinese letters.
Harps above: Dragon 38. Myrtle wood 'Ocean 36'lever harp, nylon strung ocean theme carving and inlay. Myrtle wood 36 'Ancient Style' wire harp with full set of Loveland levers. Koa wood, nylon 'Iris 27' folk harp, carved and painted Iris decorations.
I have decorated many of these custom harps with custom Carving, Sculpting,
Painting, and inlay Work of crystals and beautiful gem stones.
The carving has many times been fully in-the-round 3-D sculpting, with inlay and relief work to compliment the sculpted forms.
You can see some of these sculpted harps here on my pages on Face book and also on my website.
I have a growing series of videos of my custom harps being played, here on Face book, on YouTube and my website
